Margaret (marge) Tanner
NEW InsideOut Art Show Participating Artist, 2017!
Marge Tanner, who died in 2002 while incarcerated at the California Institution for Women (CIW), was widely respected for her artistic talents. When she died from complications after an elective surgery, it was the only time in the prison’s history that a prisoner’s memorial service had to be held in the Auditorium in order to accommodate all prisoners and staff who wished to pay tribute to the kindness, generosity, and talents of this amazing woman.
It is her life-like portrayal of animals that Marge is best known for. Whether painting with acrylic or watercolor, drawing with pencil or pastel, or carving and decorating gourds, Marge saw her art as an expression of God’s creative love force at work in the world. To this day, those who knew and remember Marge at CIW are likely to attribute especially lovely sunsets to her spirit in heaven, painting the skies for the friends and sisters she left behind. |
